Holy
Eucharist - 9:30 am
O
God, y our blessed Son made himself known to his
disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our
faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work. We
ask this with confidence in your love. Amen.

A reading
from the Book
of Isaiah 43:1-12
- But now thus says the Lord,
- he who created you, O
Jacob,
- he who formed you, O
Israel:
- Do not fear, for I have
redeemed you;
- I have called you by name, you
are mine.
- When you pass through the
waters, I will be with you;
- and through the rivers, they
shall not overwhelm you;
- when you walk through fire you
shall not be burned,
- and the flame shall not consume
you.
- For I am the Lord your
God,
- the Holy One of Israel, your
Savior.
- I give Egypt as your
ransom,
- Ethiopia and Seba in exchange
for you.
- Because you are precious in my
sight,
- and honored, and I love
you,
- I give people in return for
you,
- nations in exchange for your
life.
- Do not fear, for I am with
you;
- I will bring your offspring
from the east,
- and from the west I will gather
you;
- I will say to the north, "Give
them up,"
- and to the south, "Do not
withhold;
- bring my sons from far
away
- and my daughters from the end
of the earth--
- everyone who is called by my
name,
- whom I created for my
glory,
- whom I formed and made."
- Bring forth the people who are
blind, yet have eyes,
- who are deaf, yet have
ears!
- Let all the nations gather
together,
- and let the peoples
assemble.
- Who among them declared
this,
- and foretold to us the former
things?
- Let them bring their witnesses
to justify them,
- and let them hear and say, "It
is true."
- You are my witnesses, says the
Lord,
- and my servant whom I have
chosen,
- so that you may know and
believe me
- and understand that I am
he.
- Before me no god was
formed,
- nor shall there be any after
me.
- I, I am the Lord,
- and besides me there is no
savior.
- I declared and saved and
proclaimed,
- when there was no strange god
among you;
- and you are my witnesses, says
the Lord.

Psalm
116:10-17 Dilexi, quoniam
Hallelujah!
I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart,
in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation.
Great are the deeds of the
LORD!
they are studied by all who delight in them.
His work is full of majesty and
splendor,
and his righteousness endures for ever.
He makes his marvelous works to be
remembered;
the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.
He gives food to those who fear
him;
he is ever mindful of his covenant.
He has shown his people the power
of his works
in giving them the lands of the nations.
The works of his hands are
faithfulness and justice;
all his commandments are sure.
They stand fast for ever and
ever,
because they are done in truth and equity.
He sent redemption to his
people;
he commanded his covenant for ever;
holy and awesome is his Name.
The fear of the LORD is the
beginning of wisdom;
those who act accordingly have a good understanding;
his praise endures for ever.

A reading
from
Peter's First Letter 1:17-23
If you invoke as Father the one who judges
all people impartially according to their deeds, live in
reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that
you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your
ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold,
but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb
without defect or blemish. He was destined before the
foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the
ages for your sake. Through him you have come to trust in
God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so
that your faith and hope are set on God.
Now that you have purified your
souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have
genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart.
You have been born anew, not of perishable but of
imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of
God.

The
Gospel According to
Luke 24:13-35
That very day, the first day of the week, two
of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus,
about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each
other about all these things that had happened. While they
were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and
went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing
him.
And he said to them, "What are you
discussing with each other while you walk along?"
They stood still, looking sad. Then
one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you
the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things
that have taken place there in these days?"
He asked them, "What things?"
They replied, "The things about
Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word
before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and
leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and
crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to
redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the
third day since these things took place. Moreover, some
women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early
this morning, and when they did not find his body there,
they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a
vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those
who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the
women had said; but they did not see him."
Then he said to them, "Oh, how
foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that
the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the
Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his
glory?" Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he
interpreted to them the things about himself in all the
scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were
going, he walked ahead as if he were going on.
But they urged him strongly,
saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the
day is now nearly over."
So he went in to stay with them.
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed
and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were
opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their
sight.
They said to each other, "Were not
our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on
the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?"
That same hour they got up and
returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their
companions gathered together.
They were saying, "The Lord has
risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!"
Then they told what had happened on
the road, and how he had been made known to them in the
breaking of the bread.

Comments
on the Readings
The Diocese of Montreal offers an
attractive and useful guide to the lectionary readings.
Because it comes from of the Anglican Church of Canada which
follows the Revised Common Lectionary, the readings
sometimes may vary from those of the Episcopal Church, but
it is still helpful.
