Almighty
God, your
only-begotten son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to
us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who
celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may
be raised to new life by your life-giving Spirit. We ask
this with confidence in your love. Amen.
Today's
Lessons
Exodus 14:10-14, 21-25;
15:20-21 / Psalm 118:14-17, 22-24
Colossians 3:1-4 / Matthew 28:1-10
A reading
from the Book of Exodus
14:10-14, 21-25; 15:20-21
As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked
back, and there were the Egyptians advancing on them. In
great fear the Israelites cried out to the LORD.
They said to Moses, "Was it because
there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to
die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us
out of Egypt? Is this not the very thing we told you in
Egypt, `Let us alone and let us serve the Egyptians'? For it
would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to
die in the wilderness."
But Moses said to the people, "Do
not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the
LORD will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom
you see today you shall never see again. The LORD will fight
for you, and you have only to keep still."
Then Moses stretched out his hand
over the sea. The LORD drove the sea back by a strong east
wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the
waters were divided. The Israelites went into the sea on dry
ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right
and on their left.
The Egyptians pursued, and went
into the sea after them, all of Pharaoh's horses, chariots,
and chariot drivers. At the morning watch the LORD in the
pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the Egyptian army,
and threw the Egyptian army into panic. He clogged their
chariot wheels so that they turned with difficulty.
The Egyptians said, "Let us flee
from the Israelites, for the LORD is fighting for them
against Egypt."
Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron's
sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women
went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. And
Miriam sang to them: "Sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed
gloriously; horse and rider he has thrown into the
sea."

Psalm
118:14-17, 22-24
Confitemini Domino
The LORD is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation.
There is a sound of exultation and
victory
in the tents of the righteous:
"The right hand of the LORD has
triumphed!
the right hand of the LORD is exalted!
the right hand of the LORD has triumphed!"
I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the LORD.
The same stone which the builders
rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
This is the LORD'S doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes.
On this day the LORD has acted;
we will rejoice and be glad in it.

A reading
from
Paul's letter to the Colossians 3:1-4
So if you have been raised with Christ, seek
the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the
right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above,
not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your
life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your
life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in
glory.

The
Gospel according to
Matthew 28:1-10
After the sabbath, as the first day of the
week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to
see the tomb. And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for
an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and
rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like
lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him
the guards shook and became like dead men.
But the angel said to the women,
"Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who
was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he
said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and
tell his disciples, `He has been raised from the dead, and
indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will
see him.' This is my message for you."
So they left the tomb quickly with
fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
Suddenly Jesus met them and said,
"Greetings!"
And they came to him, took hold of
his feet, and worshiped him.
Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be
afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they
will see me."

Comments
on the Readings
The Diocese of Montreal offers an
attractive and useful guide to the lectionary readings.
Because it comes from of the Anglican Church of Canada which
follows the Revised Common Lectionary, the readings
sometimes may vary from those of the Episcopal Church, but
it is still helpful.
