It's world-class
Reflections on the gospel for the Sunday after Christmas
31 December 2000

By The Rev. Mark A. Lewis, Vicar

Isaiah 61:10 - 62:3 / Psalm 147:13-21
Galatians 3:23-25; 4:4-7 /
John 1:1-18

The last day of the millennium. Talking about God in such mystical terms -- in the midst of a snowstorm. It's suitable for a novel or a movie. It really is fitting, and more than a little awe-inspiring.

This passage aims to tell us something about Jesus and how Jesus relates to God. John's whole gospel deals with the topic that for believers to know Jesus effectively we need to know WHO he is, WHERE he comes from, and WHERE he was headed, from the very beginning of creation -- back to God, where he came from and with whom he is one.

The poetry and complexity of this passage is really world-class. And that give me permission to leave some of the burden of understanding it on you all. I can't "explain" these mysteries anymore than the great minds and hearts of the church could over the centuries. As with so much in life, we have to forego precise description and just rely on a flow of hunches and images and ideas. And do the best we can with what we have.

And, at the end of the millennium, on a quiet, snowy morning, that might be lesson enough for anyone to take away.
