"Stewardship is everything you do after you say yes to Jesus Christ" -- Clarence Stoughton

A message from our pastor

Dear Friends,

Summer has flown by again and fall is coming fast. Many things are the same as ever here at church; but there are lots of changes, too First, two of the changes. Many of you have met Carolyn Adams. Carolyn is a student at Drew Theological Seminary and she will be with us this coming year as an intern. Our job is to let Carolyn see as many aspects of our congregationÕs life as possible. Dorothy and I will have particular duties, as will CarolynÕs committee of advisors headed by Lisa Dever. But everyone has a role. Talk to her. Tell her how you think sheÕs doing.

Another new resident here on Flanagan Way is the DancePower Studio directed by Renee Rocco of Secaucus. This long-established business took over our church basement in August when the Learning Tree nursery school closed. The Rocco family have worked wonders with our space and propose to do much more. In a related change, all our 12-step groups have moved upstairs and now meet in the Vicarage. Did you know that our church is in use serving our community every single day of the week? Wednesdays are busiest with a needlework group, AA, young dancers, and karate students all passing through. Secaucus needs us.

On Sunday the 26th, we turn our thoughts to stewardship in a specific way. YouÕve all heard the old motto before. ŌStewardship is all we do with all we have all the time.Ķ But in the fall we stop for four Sundays and focus on how we use our financial assets to support the work of our local congregation and the larger church worldwide.

Please consider what our church is worth to you. And think, as always, in percentages. The bottom line is not the number of dollars you decide to commit to our work, itÕs the proportion of importance you place on our ministry and the way you bring that level of importance into line with the percentage of your annual budget you dedicate to the church. ItÕs only one part of the way you do GodÕs work, but if youÕre like me itÕs a big part.

Just say, for example, you decide that the Church of Our Saviour occupies something like 5% of your thoughts, joys, affections, and ambitions. Maybe you canÕt match that by offering the same percentage of your income. But you might be able to swing something like 2% toward supporting your church. Perhaps you havenÕt reevaluated your giving in a few years. Inflation affects churches just as it affects you. For the past three years we have been struggling to do more and more with basically the same budget. If every one of us thinks proportionally about our giving, though, nothing can stop us. WeÕll be out there looking for more mission and service to offer GodÕs world.

Our four-week fall focus on stewardship begins on 26 September and wraps up with an ingathering of Estimate of Giving cards on 17 October. After that, the Treasurer will begin to build our 2005 budget based on the prayerful, private, and respected offerings of our congregation. When a member of the Executive Committee telephones or visits with you in person, please take that opportunity to renew your support for our church in a way that genuinely reflects its value to you.

Faithfully yours,

(The Rev.) Mark Alan Lewis
