"Stewardship is
everything you do after you say yes to Jesus Christ"

Stewardship Fact Sheet
Fall 2002
Where
the money goes
Inside our
walls.
The money you give to
the Church of Our Saviour provides:
- Pastoral care for parishioners and
the larger community
Salary and wages for clergy, musician, janitor, and
landscaper
Building maintenance and utilities
Municipal fees in lieu of taxes
Office expenses, postage, telephone, internet
provider
And much more
Outside our
walls
Approximately 20 percent of our annual budget is allocated
for outreach giving to:
- The local and worldwide work of
our diocese and the national church
International relief organizations like Church World
Services
Environmental causes including the Nature Conservancy
Health organizations including AmFAR
World peace efforts through the Carter Center
Local needs: CrossRoads Camp, Secaucus Social Services,
and more
Plus, hands-on and in-kind service made possible through
the Vicar's time.
Christ Hospital Board of Trustees
Secaucus Shade Tree Commission, Police and Fire
Chaplain
Episcopal Health Services of Jersey City
Seamen's Church Institute and Trinity Parish's 9/11
relief
Through our website at www.secaucus.org we provide all
sorts of services to Internet users, literally making our
ministry an international one.
In 2003, we hope to expand this
work, increasing the outreach percentage in our budget
toward our ultimate goal: 50% of our pledged income going to
outreach.
How we do
things here
How we plan
We have -- as far as we
know -- a truly unique stewardship plan for helping you
support our church's mission. It's designed to honor you,
your gift, and God.
Each September.
- You receive an "Estimate of
Giving" card
You thoughtfully evaluate the level of support you wish
to give
You complete the card with an estimate of the amount of
money you plan to contribute in the course of the
upcoming year
The card is unsigned. We believe you are the best monitor
of your giving
You return the card to an Executive Committee member, by
mail, or in the alms basin at church
Only then does the Treasurer build the mission and
ministry budget
Then the money talk ends. You are never "nickeled and
dimed" all year long.
We cut our suit to fit our cloth.
You are not asked to fund a pre-made budget, as though
paying dues. Our ministry is based on the sum of our
people's willing gifts to God. That way, we know that our
work is truly the work of our members done to the glory of
God. And you know that the church respects your careful
giving decision.
How we
act
Deciding how we want to give some percentage of our
financial resources is an important self-examination. Ask
yourself what portion of your time and financial resources
you'll dedicate to our church's work. Remember, all human
beings have a natural need to give as well as to
receive.
- Most people pace their giving,
placing installments in the alms basin weekly
Others make their offerings monthly, quarterly, or even
annually
Some find a tax advantage by giving all or part of their
gift in advance of the year
A growing number of givers takes advantage of laws
allowing gifts of stock
This can be a great boon for both church and parishioner;
ask your accountant
Pledge envelopes are provided for those who like a
reminder to give regularly
Tax receipts are provided by the Treasurer upon
request
Important: Your estimate of giving is just that, an
estimate. If your financial circumstances change over the
course of the year, your proportional giving - necessarily -
will too. And that's fine. If you think the change will be
significant, the Treasurer appreciates a heads up. "My wife
decided to stay home with the baby; our giving will have to
go down." Or "I won the lottery! Get ready!"
Why we do
this
We want our church to
be a Portal for God's Peace reaching far and near
- God has richly blessed us and we
want to return a portion of our wealth to God
We know that stewardship is all we do with all we have
all the time
Well-ordered finances are a big step toward a
well-ordered life
Together, we can do so much more than we ever could
alone. That's the point of working as a body, the Body of
Christ.
