"Stewardship is everything you do after you say yes to Jesus Christ" -- Clarence Stoughton

Proportional Giving
...Your way of saying thank you to God

Proportional giving can be your way of saying thank you to God. As you plan, please bear in mind some essential principles of stewardship.

The call to make a financial commitment to God's work is directed to all of us regardless of how much or how little money we have.

Financial gifts, for the majority of us, are the most tangible way we participate in the ministry of the church.

The dollar amount of the gift is not the important part; the intention is

The Bible suggests giving 10% to God's work. It's a traditional goal

The relative importance of the gift to the giver is fundamental. That is why the key to good stewardship of our money lies in proportion, allocating our funds in relationship to the total of what we have. Only then can we know if the proportion of our income given to God's work is significant enough so that our hearts will follow our treasure.

How much of your income would you feel truly good about contributing toward the work of the church? 1%? Or would that seem too little? 5%? It's really up to you. 10%? The Bible would suggest that if you give away more than that amount to good works, you should distribute your gifts among more places than just church.

It's a matter of the heart, and the head. One person may give precisely 10% of her pre-tax gross income in regular weekly installments. Sitting in the same pew, a man may have decided that he's giving 7.5% of his take home pay (after medical expenses) to God's work this year, some here and some through another channel. Maybe he can swing 8% by next year, he thinks. There's a name for people like that: Good stewards of God's gifts. Both have thought hard about their giving. That helps build strong Christians and strong churches.

A chart on the next page will help you calculate your weekly giving as a proportion of your income.
