Welcome!
...Continued

How do I become a member? All are welcome to receive Holy Communion at the Church of Our Saviour. If you are a visitor from another part of Christ's Church you are also a part of our church. If you decide to make the Church of Our Saviour your home, speak to our pastor.

How can I get acquainted? We're a pretty friendly bunch. Say hello to the person seated next to you. Introduce yourself to the pastor. Join us at coffee hour following the service. That's when we all get to know each other better.

Beyond our doors. We also express our love for our neighbors through hands-on ministry and financial outreach. We provide assistance for Meals On Wheels. We collect food for the hungry. We store furniture for distribution to those in need. We contribute toward world peace, disaster relief, youth programs in Secaucus, the Nature Conservancy, ecumenical activities, diocesan outreach, and other activities. Purchases from affiliate on-line merchants provide commissions which support our public service outreach.

A bit of history. The Church of Our Saviour was born in 1924 when a group of Episcopalians grew tired of traveling to Jersey City for worship and organized a congregation in Secaucus. They erected the church building still in use today, a prefabricated structure purchased from the Sears & Roebuck catalogue. It originally stood across the street but was moved to its present site in 1953. Many changes have been made since then.

Meet our pastor. Mark Lewis is the vicar, or priest in charge, of the Church of Our Saviour. Call him "Mark." He was born and raised in a small Arkansas town. He studied at the University of the South (Sewanee), the University of Virginia, and the Virginia Theological Seminary. He served parishes in Washington, D.C.; Virginia; and Ridgewood, New Jersey before coming to Secaucus in 1994. Mark serves on diocesan committees. He is a trustee of Christ Hospital in Jersey City. In Secaucus he is a Police and Fire Chaplain, a member of the Shade Tree Commission, and a board member of the Harmony Early Learning Center.

Church of the year. The Church of Saviour was awarded the Bishop's Banner for Congregational Excellence at the 1999 Convention of the Diocese of Newark. The award is made to one church a a year for all-round achievement as a congregation. Our members present were surprised and honored with the award. It was the first time that the award had been made to a church as small as ours and we were only the second Hudson County congregation to receive the award.

Editorial lauds our pastor. The editorial in the 10 June 1999 edition of the Secaucus Home News , singled out Mark Lewis, vicar of the Church of Our Saviour, for the welcome he offers to all. It follows.

Everyone's Welcome!

We admire how the Rev. Mark Lewis, in his weekly column of our church page, emphasizes that everyone is welcome to attend services at the Church of Our Saviour, where he serves as vicar. He is not only encouraging the regular parishioners of the local Episcopal Church to attend services and get involved in church "doings," Rev. Lewis is also inviting all community members to "his" church. Whether you're a lapsed member of the Episcopal church or any other church, whether you're single, married, or divorced, old or young, black or white, straight or gay, you are welcome and wanted at Our Saviour. How refreshing!

After all, a church should be a place where you can go to find support, solace, and care, no matter what your personal situation might be; it's a place where criticism and judgment should be left at the door, and where the caring concern of one's fellow beings should be paramount.

Since Rev. Lewis has been the vicar at Our Saviour, it has experienced a rebirth in terms of its growing congregation and growing involvement in the community. Even the exterior of the edifice and the church grounds have been given new life! No wonder Our Saviour has been honored by the Episcopal Archdiocese of Newark as the "Church of the Year."

To add to his banner year, the local church is celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary this year, and is celebration this Saturday with a FREE OUTDOOR FESTIVAL. And, of course, everyone is welcome!

Congratulations to the congregation of the Church of Our Saviour for all your recent achievements, and especially for taking the lead of the Rev. Mark Lewis. By opening the doors so eagerly and with so much love for his fellow man, he has given Our Saviour and our community a wonderful path to follow.
